Holy Monday.... a special week for the Greek Orthodox people. A religious week full of special feelings... sadness, compression, sorrow, melancholy. All these feelings lead to love, hope and rebirth. This is actually what the Greek Orthodox believe: there's no death, there's the resurrection and the life.
People of all ages are all immersed in the spirit of the Passion Week. They go to the church, they fast, they remember several traditions, they pray, they realise the real meaning of life, the message of /jesus Christ: no matter how much we suffer, we pray, we love and we forgive, for this is what Jesus Christ did.
It's true that in big cities images of the real holy and religious sentiments and traditions are not easy to be found. Shops are open everyday non-stop, frenetic rythms continue to exist, children are on school holiday and parents spend money on expensive presents new clothes, new toys.
A totally different atmosphere exists in villages all over the island. If you are lucky enough to be in Crete during this week, rent a car and cease the opportunity! Avoid the hustle and bustle of the cities and drive around the small villages in any of the four regions of Crete (Chania, Rethimno, Heraclio, Lassithi). Feel the serenity in the atmosphere, the religious character of the week. You will realise that Greek Orthodoxy is more a sentiment than an istitution. Attend the service in the little church or monastery every evening with the locals, still profoundly religious, watch them... feel them. In that moment only, will you realise the real meaing of these days.
Enjoy your stay!
